Electrical System Studies
During the initial stages of a project, a system study must be performed to determine a variety of factors that will establish a large part of the project budget by specifying the minimum ratings of the primary equipment. As well, it can identify potential problems in the electrical system that might cause problems and delays during the construction and commissioning stage. It can also provide an insight into possible future system expansions by creating scenarios and study cases. Such system studies can save time, money and provide safe working environments.
Usual system studies that can be performed are Short Circuit to see if the chosen circuit breakers are adequate, Load Flow which can identify voltage drops on the system and determine tap changer positions on the power transformers. Load flow study can also check the ampacity of the power cables and determine the power factor. Such studies can be used to improve the system such as installing capacitor banks to improve the power factor or installing harmonic filters to suppress higher order harmonics and improve the quality of the electrical supply. Dynamic and transient study cases can also be performed while creating understandable and concise reports.
